Self-Care

Perfectly Imperfect

I tend to be one of those who reads multiple books at a time. At any given moment, I am reading a novel, a self-help book, and a cookbook all at once. My brain just simply needs that variety.

As I was looking at my [ever-growing] pile of books (I will be buying those bookshelves soon), one I haven’t read in a while caught my eye so I grabbed it and opened it…and then I remembered why I loved this book so much when I first read it: Grace over perfection.

Emily Ley’s aptly titled book, Grace, Not Perfection: Embracing Simplicity, Celebrating Joy, is timeless because no matter what the day, season, or year, we (as humans) put a lot of pressure on ourselves to achieve that level of what we consider ‘perfection.’ But, what if we didn’t reach that perfection? What if we simply practiced Grace towards ourselves (and others) on a daily basis?

When we practice Grace, we forgive. We choose personal relationships. We move throughout our days with beauty and ease. We approach situations with a pleasant and controlled behavior.

Now, so many of us practice Grace when it comes to others, but then we tend to forget about it with ourselves. We feel defeated when we are too this or too that or not enough this and not enough that. Pressure, pressure, pressure to achieve perfection. I know I am this way MUCH TOO OFTEN, and I am sure others feel it too.

So, let’s start today by choosing Grace over perfection. Let’s forgive ourselves for the things we didn’t get done or the mistakes we made along the way. If we simply do our best even [ESPECIALLY] when our best isn’t perfect, our days will take on a whole new feeling and meaning.
