Summer Book 2: All Adults Here

I need to start off by saying that I am a slacker this summer with my reading! Usually by now I have finished at least one book a week…and here we are, in August, and I have only gotten through book #2. Boo on me.

Now, I will admit that I have been extra busy with my post-graduate courses, so I do have that as an excuse. However, I have to start setting aside more time to read for enjoyment…no ifs, ands, or buts.

Anyway, since all of that is out in the open…let me tell you about my latest read, All Adults Here, by Emma Straub.

So, first things first. If there was ever a book that exemplifies the term “adulting,” this would be it.

The book follows the lives of one family, for the most part, and they have a unique relationship with each other. I am an only child and so this book offered a REALLY good take on siblings, that ever-prevalent birth order thing, and the ties that bind no matter what – even as adults.

Now, having grown up (and still residing) in a small town, I could TOTALLY relate to the ins and outs and little nuances of small town life. Yes, there is such a thing. Everybody knows your name, everybody knows your story, and everybody is eerily connected (in a good and bad way sometimes). This book portrays all of this perfectly, and I’m sure you can connect the dots.

The first sentence of the book alone had me thinking, “what am I in for?” and I sat back ready to enjoy the wild ride of the next 354 pages. Each chapter felt like I was reading from the secret diaries of Straub’s characters. The writing is real, the characters are relatable, and I found myself nodding my head in agreement many times.

Read about this family’s coming of age, falling apart, and falling back together.
