Do you remember when you were in school and the teacher made you write a poem using your senses? You had to really become one with the poem’s topic to find ideas for your writing. Enter adulthood…and we can still use this strategy today.

*Disclaimer: this can be used with children as well because I have practiced it in the classroom with my kiddos, and they love it!*

Sometimes all we need to do to find our calm is tap into our senses because when doing so, we are brought back to our surroundings and/or the present moment. With that being said, one of the most common grounding or calming techniques for anxiety is the 54321 strategy. See the picture below for details.

*Please note: Sometimes it’s hard to taste something in the present moment, so you can substitute that with something you love to taste OR one thing you love about yourself.*
