Self-Talk Part 3: Change Your Words, Change Your Mindset

Just like positive affirmations can help us begin our self-talk journey, sometimes what we really need is to change our mindset. Now mind you, changing our mindset then changing our words would be the best option because who doesn’t want to jump right in?! But…sometimes we simply have to “fake it ’til we make it,” and the more we practice a positive shift with our words, the more our brains start to move in that direction.

What exactly does it mean to change our words? Let’s look at some of the examples below. When we shift our words and thoughts, we show ourselves some self-love.

“I can’t do that.”
…becomes…
“How can this be done?”

“I don’t deserve this/that.”
…becomes…
“I have earned this by…”

“I am not enough.”
…becomes…
“My unique qualities make me special.”

“I hate feeling this way.”
…becomes…
“It’s okay to have these feelings.”

“I messed up.”
…becomes…
“I accept my mistake and can grow from it.”

If we continue to keep in mind that we want to speak to ourselves the way we speak to the ones we love, this shift in our thoughts and our words will start to come more naturally.
